Our Little Man isn’t quite so “little” anymore!   So many changes this month and it just seemed to fly by.

At a recent well-baby visit Kaelen weighed in at 20 Lbs, 12 Oz.  We measured his height today and he is now 30.5 inches tall!  Kaelen has stayed middle of the road weight-wise, but has stayed on the tall side for his age.

Little Man has four teeth at this moment: One of the top center teeth, and three teeth on the bottom. There are several on the top that seem to be poised to come in at any second.  Kaelen LOVES having his teeth brushed.

Kaelen is still wearing 12 month size clothes, I am soooo THANKFUL not to be changing out his wardrobe already again in a month like I did with the last few sizes.  I did take a peek at what I have in the 18 month size and I’m super excited for Kaelen to get to wear the overalls that I snagged at the bag sale last month.  I only need to finish out his fall/winter wardrobe with some long-sleeve onesies and some PJ’s.

Sleeping has continued to stay much the same as last post, although Kaelen is staying awake longer between his naps usually at least 2 hours before he needs to lay down.  Sometimes Kaelen would rather play than nap and stays awake amusing himself in his crib for up to an hour before finally taking a nap.  More and more he seems to really only take 2 naps per day.  I am hoping that he will begin to lengthen these naps soon, but as of yet most of his naps fall between 1-1.5 hours.

Kaelen really started talking this month!  See this post that I wrote when he first started babbling.  Since that post Kaelen has added: papaya, nanana, and occasionally makes a /d or g/ but doesn’t say them repetitively or as often.  “Bababa”, “Mamama”, & “Papapa” remain his predominant favorites along with blowing raspberries.

This month marked the transition from “starting to crawl” to Kaelen being an accomplished crawler! I will write a post about his crawling progression and post some videos, but for this moment just enjoy the adorable crawling pictures that I took after this month’s picture session.

In “standing” news, Kaelen started pulling up on low chairs and his toys this month.  He also pulls up on us if we’re playing with him on the bed or floor.  He LOVES playing on the floor with his Daddy.  Doug likes to “roughhouse” with him, rolling around on the floor with him cradled in his arms kissing him, blowing raspberries, or making growling noises.  Kaelen laughs and laughs…. so cute!

Kaelen has added blueberries, steamed broccoli, steamed carrots, and puffs into his regular repertoire of foods. He has also tasted orange, grapes, and chicken.  He still makes funny faces with new foods, but “favorites” he greets with enthusiasm.  He has really gotten good at consuming softer foods.  In the past week he has been working on his pincer grasp and coordination with the puffs.  He can get them into his mouth now (rather than getting them “stuck” in his fist), although it isn’t pretty or smooth yet.  He LOVES eating the puffs though so I’m sure he will get good at eating them before long.  Kaelen has continued to nurse 5-6 times a day depending on his preference.

This month has marked the beginning of the childproofing project!  Since Kaelen is crawling so well we knew that we needed to get the gates installed and making other adjustments.  It’s crazy… who knew power cords for things were so appealing???

Thus far we have:
hung gates
installed a couple special outlet covers for outlets we use constantly
put plug covers in outlets
removed a speaker/speaker stand from the living room that Kaelen kept knocking over
purchased a fire screen & wired it to the fireplace
gotten good at keeping bedroom & bathroom doors closed

We have alot left to do in this department including installing the locks for the cabinets where there are chemicals or dangerous items in the kitchen/bathrooms.  However, we are going to “wait and see” for some of the childproofing to see what Kaelen does get into and how much we actually need to do.  One day I know we will have to put up the locks for the lever style door handles, but fortunately that’s a long way off!

Our Little Warrior doesn’t fit in the Laundry basket as well as he used to… my how he’s grown!  Maybe at the end of the year I’ll do a collage of all the pictures together…

Kaelen’s favorite thing to say BY FAR is “Bababa” but he does throw in an occasional”Mamama” “Dadada” or a “Wah” in the middle of a string of sounds. Its hilarious too because sometimes he’ll move his mouth like he is saying “Bababa” but the only sound is a smacking noise from his lips. He’s very conversational as well and often will start talking to us if we look at him and tell him, “ah bababa ba”.

We went to the pool last Friday and on Wenesday this week with friends and Kaelen absolutely LOVES kicking & splashing, & playing in the water. Ever since we visited Lauren & Lily in Atlanta we have also been working on holding his breath while I dunk him under water. The first couple times we practice at each visit to the pool he makes noises after but by the third of fourth time he comes up with a grin.

This week we visited Steve & Brittany at their lake home so naturally we took the bear with us for our Friday picture.  Since it was so picturesque we took Kaelen’s picture down on the dock and stayed down there to play a bit.  Kaelen also took his first (2) boat rides in a motor boat.  He LOVED it, even with the wind in his face.  Doug and I love it that Kaelen seems to truly be a “water baby”!

Brittany’s two dogs Roxy (mommy dog) & puppy, Bullet (a terrier mix) was super sweet and ADORED Kaelen.  He was smaller than Kaelen so I let them play together on the floor.  Bullet did like to give kisses more than I liked, but it gave Kaelen a perfect opportunity to spend time with a puppy.  Bullet liked to come and roll over right in front of Kaelen to be petted or just snuggle up next to him.  Both dogs were very patient with Kaelen as well and let him crawl after them and pet them as much as he wanted.  One really funny story: while Brittany & I were fixing dinner the two dogs gathered all of their toys right in front of Kaelen because they wanted him to play with them, so Kaelen obliged by joining in gnawing on one of the doggie bones!!!! I wish now I had thought to take a picture before I snatched the bone out of his hands!  We had a blast visiting and I’m looking forward to the next time!

Enjoy this week’s Bear picture!

Without realizing it I dressed Kaelen in the same outfit as he was wearing last Friday!  LOL!  At least it’s a cute one!  Doug took a few pictures of Kaelen playing on the floor before we took his weekly picture so I included a couple of those.  Kaelen is now crawling about 4-5 movements at a time before he flops on the floor.  He’s learning so quickly!

Reflections & Special Moments

Posted on

Today I read a beautifully written blog entry written by Rachel Macy Stafford at HandsFreeMama.com about not hurrying through life so much that we hurt our children (and others) and miss those special sweet and tender moments as parents. I sat with tears streaming down my face as I read it; seeing my busy, list building, task oriented nature in her words… Realizing that without purposeful intention on my part in the coming months and years, “But for the Grace of God, there go I”.

Already I have slowed down since becoming a mother, many times its because I want to, other times because I HAVE to. The best piece of advice that many people shared with me before Kaelen was born was to cherish every moment because he will grow up so quickly.  I really took that to heart because so many people made it a point to say the same thing.  And I truly have endeavored to take time for the little things to be significant. Yet too often I have found myself frustrated or felt utterly inadequate to conquer a small list of tasks that I would have handled in short order pre-motherhood. Rachel’s thoughtfully written words remind me that in these moments I feel those things because of what I prioritize. It really is my choice how I measure myself, whether I am choosing to be happy and content with my life. (ouch!)

The reflection above caused me to reflect on a few things that I want to carry tucked away in my heart and memory forever as my baby boy so quickly grows:

~The way I feel like I could fall into Kaelen’s eyes as he looks up at me while we nurse.

~The way he laughs hysterically at me as though I’m the funniest person ever (even when I’m not doing anything special).

~The amazement I feel as I watch him learning a new skill. Right now it’s moving his hands together with his legs to crawl. Each little thing is something to celebrate!

~Yesterday I was crying (over something irrelevant) as I picked him up, and he sensing my emotion, grabbed my shoulder, gave me a sweet kiss and then cuddled with me, as if intentionally comforting me.

~The way that Kaelen stops and checks with his Daddy to make sure that everything is all right (like when he meets someone new). If Daddy smiles then everything is right with his world.

~Kaelen has always LOVED fans and light fixtures.  He will stop what he is doing to check out the lights and fixtures in any room and just delights in analyzing them.  Recently he was playing on a hotel bed next to a lamp and realized he could look at the lamp from underneath the shade, or rock up and look at it from outside the shade.  His curiosity and observance of things around him is incredible to watch.

~It makes my day every time I go to get Kaelen off the floor or out of his crib! When he spots me coming for him, Kaelen gets the BIGGEST smile and starts wiggling every part of his body in anticipation.  In that moment I feel like the most special person in all the world that he would respond that way EVERY time.

~Watching Doug play with Kaelen… Kaelen just LOVES his Daddy!  They have such a special bond.  Kaelen can hear or see Daddy in the room and can’t wait to play.  In fact if Kaelen is supposed to be nursing or focusing on something Doug has to “hide” and be quiet because otherwise Kaelen stops what he is doing every few moments to smile, coo, or try to play with Daddy.

These are just a few special moments, but at least if I write them down here then I can come back and be reminded of how special they are.  Time to go get my little man from his crib!

Ah ba ba ba ma ma ma!

You will all have to bear with the Speech Therapist in me for a little bit in this post!

Early this morning we arrived home from our trip to Atlanta and as I changed Kaelen into a night-time diaper and his pajamas he began doing some Consonant-Vowel sound play for the first time!

The first thing he said sounded like the title of this entry, “Ah bababa mamama” but he went on from there while he was on the changing table enjoying listening to himself.

Thus far Kaelen does all of the following: shrieking, blowing raspberries, Ah, Oh, Ooo, Goo, Ba, & Ma.

The shrieking is sooo funny because he does it quietly with lots of extra air coming out. I’ll have to try to get a video of it. Blowing raspberries is his FAVORITE and he instantly gets a big grin when someone blows one to him. He has been doing extended vowel play with the sounds Ah, Oh, & Ooo and changing the pitch of his voice up and down for a while. It’s so fun to see him develop and add new things!

Here’s a video of him “talking” 🙂

31 Weeks and Visiting with Lauren & Lily

Posted on

This week we were able to go to Atlanta to get in a much needed visit with Lauren and Lily while Doug went onsite to work with a client of his down there.  It was fantastic to get a nice long visit with Lauren since I really haven’t seen her since she came to Charlotte several months ago.  We mostly spent time just chilling with Kaelen & Lily playing on the floor or talking while they napped.  We did take the two of them swimming after Lily’s nap on Thursday and I got to see Lily put her ISR swim techniques to use floating on her back and swimming to the edge of the pool.  Lauren showed me how to work with Kaelen on holding his breath when he goes underwater and by the end of the pool time he could do it without swallowing any water or sputtering when he came out of the water.

Thursday night Lauren took me out for Sushi!  It was sooo yummy but the best part was uninterrupted girl time! We talked about everything under the sun and just relaxed.  We ordered a few rolls to start and after we polished them off in short order, we put in a second order.  I think our favorite roll had eel, avocado, & shrimp tempura in it.  We sat at the bar so we were able to watch the sushi chef work and it was super quiet in the restaurant… just perfect!

We had to leave Friday afternoon to head home and the visit was over too quickly!   This week we borrowed the chair Lauren always took Lily’s weekly pictures in all year last year.  Lily waited for us to get Kaelen’s picture and then jumped in to get some pictures with Kaelen and the bear.   Enjoy these pictures!

7 Months Old!

Posted on

This has been a busy and exciting month!  We are really enjoying this phase because Kaelen is doing something new almost daily and it is so neat to watch him as he figures new things out.  Sometimes we can almost see what he’s thinking… it’s so cool!

Kaelen is purposely moving pretty much wherever he wants and has begun moving faster. He can get all the way across the room rather quickly, and will if take off if he sees something he is interested in.  My friend Jessica describes the current movement pattern as Kaelen doing “the worm”! Haha!  I will post a video of it at some point just to document this stage. 🙂

On Friday Kaelen figured out how to get from his hands and knees to sitting up as often as he likes.  He did it about 6 or 8 times while we were visiting with Nana and has continued to move between crawling and sitting since.  Kaelen sat up in his crib to chew on crib rail for the first time today when I put him down for his morning nap.  I turned on the video monitor and just had to laugh since he was sitting there pretty as you please just going after the rail!  Doug ran in to catch a picture of him and lay him back down to take his nap.  I ordered a crib rail chew guard a month ago that didn’t end up fitting this crib so now I’m going to have to try again.

Kaelen is making lots of sounds and LOVES to sit and talk to his toys, or chatter when he’s riding in his car seat.  He makes the sounds: Ah, OOO, Oh, and /G/ in combinations.  His favorite noise right now is probably blowing raspberries, and he also likes to make screeching noises (but these he makes at a very quiet volume).

Little man is  now wearing 12 month size clothes.  I just changed over his clothes today from the prior size.  It is really nice that all of the clothes fit in two small drawers in the high changer and he mostly just wears onesies.  Yesterday,  Susan (Grandma) and I hit up a couple of the kid’s consignment stores in town since they were having a $10 bag sale and got lots of overalls, some shoes, and a few long sleeve things for Kaelen in 18 month & 24 month sizes.  It is really nice to be able to get things inexpensively!

Kaelen is continuing to take 2 or 3 naps per day.  It seems like he may be in the process of getting rid of his evening nap.  I hope that as he does that he will begin taking longer naps for his other two!   Overnight Kaelen does sometimes sleep 11 or so hours from 9pm-8am OR he wakes up between 5-6am to eat if he needs.  I’m good with him keeping the overnight nursing as long as he needs it.

Kaelen has his center two bottom teeth.  The second tooth came in 8 days after the first and thus far those are the only two. Since the Six Month post we did begin introducing food as planned using Baby-Led Weaning/Solids.  Kaelen sits in the “Baby Butler”, which is an old-fashioned baby seat that I got from my grandfather’s house to eat once or twice a day after he nurses.  Thus far Kaelen has enjoyed Cucumber Sticks, Carrot Sticks, Avocado Slices, Apple Wedges, Broccoli Florets, Sourdough Waffle (plain of course).  At first taste Kaelen made some really hilarious faces, and still does when we give him something new.  He seems to like everything, although his “favorite” seems to vary day to day.

Here are the pictures from this month’s shoot.  Kaelen was very funny and didn’t want to sit on the couch so he kept trying to crawl away each time we positioned him. So I’ve included a few of the “outtakes”.

The most exciting thing this week is that Kaelen has started moving across the room purposely! It’s mostly commando crawling or getting up on his hands and knees then lunging, but its clear that he will really be crawling soon!!! Yay! In the meantime we have to go ahead and put up the baby gates….

We also lowered the crib to the next setting because Kaelen realized he could suck on the rails if he picked his head allllllll the way up. He also was able to lift his bottom above the level of the rails when he got up on his hands and toes (doing baby down dog).

Kaelen and I joined my friends Megan & Bethany at the pool on Tuesday and he is really enjoying the water. He spent most of the time we were in the water grinning and kicking/splashing. It’s taken a little while but he seems to be getting used to wearing the sun hat & sunglasses. Today when I put them on he tried to eat the sunglasses, but since the sun was bothering his eyes so within a few minutes he quit messing with them. I’m super excited about Kaelen learning to swim with how much he loves the water. He dunked his face a couple times today and came up sputtering – haha! I think he was trying to drink the pool! Next year I’m planning to put Kaelen in ISR swim lessons (Infant Self-Rescue) since they are able to teach very young children to float, then roll& swim to the edge of the pool. Not only is great for safety but also gives him access to the water and the ability to swim earlier than most kids learn to really swim!
