7 Months Old!

Posted on

This has been a busy and exciting month!  We are really enjoying this phase because Kaelen is doing something new almost daily and it is so neat to watch him as he figures new things out.  Sometimes we can almost see what he’s thinking… it’s so cool!

Kaelen is purposely moving pretty much wherever he wants and has begun moving faster. He can get all the way across the room rather quickly, and will if take off if he sees something he is interested in.  My friend Jessica describes the current movement pattern as Kaelen doing “the worm”! Haha!  I will post a video of it at some point just to document this stage. 🙂

On Friday Kaelen figured out how to get from his hands and knees to sitting up as often as he likes.  He did it about 6 or 8 times while we were visiting with Nana and has continued to move between crawling and sitting since.  Kaelen sat up in his crib to chew on crib rail for the first time today when I put him down for his morning nap.  I turned on the video monitor and just had to laugh since he was sitting there pretty as you please just going after the rail!  Doug ran in to catch a picture of him and lay him back down to take his nap.  I ordered a crib rail chew guard a month ago that didn’t end up fitting this crib so now I’m going to have to try again.

Kaelen is making lots of sounds and LOVES to sit and talk to his toys, or chatter when he’s riding in his car seat.  He makes the sounds: Ah, OOO, Oh, and /G/ in combinations.  His favorite noise right now is probably blowing raspberries, and he also likes to make screeching noises (but these he makes at a very quiet volume).

Little man is  now wearing 12 month size clothes.  I just changed over his clothes today from the prior size.  It is really nice that all of the clothes fit in two small drawers in the high changer and he mostly just wears onesies.  Yesterday,  Susan (Grandma) and I hit up a couple of the kid’s consignment stores in town since they were having a $10 bag sale and got lots of overalls, some shoes, and a few long sleeve things for Kaelen in 18 month & 24 month sizes.  It is really nice to be able to get things inexpensively!

Kaelen is continuing to take 2 or 3 naps per day.  It seems like he may be in the process of getting rid of his evening nap.  I hope that as he does that he will begin taking longer naps for his other two!   Overnight Kaelen does sometimes sleep 11 or so hours from 9pm-8am OR he wakes up between 5-6am to eat if he needs.  I’m good with him keeping the overnight nursing as long as he needs it.

Kaelen has his center two bottom teeth.  The second tooth came in 8 days after the first and thus far those are the only two. Since the Six Month post we did begin introducing food as planned using Baby-Led Weaning/Solids.  Kaelen sits in the “Baby Butler”, which is an old-fashioned baby seat that I got from my grandfather’s house to eat once or twice a day after he nurses.  Thus far Kaelen has enjoyed Cucumber Sticks, Carrot Sticks, Avocado Slices, Apple Wedges, Broccoli Florets, Sourdough Waffle (plain of course).  At first taste Kaelen made some really hilarious faces, and still does when we give him something new.  He seems to like everything, although his “favorite” seems to vary day to day.

Here are the pictures from this month’s shoot.  Kaelen was very funny and didn’t want to sit on the couch so he kept trying to crawl away each time we positioned him. So I’ve included a few of the “outtakes”.

Mother’s Day 2013

Posted on

What an adventure becoming a mother has been and I know it has just begun!  Thinking about Mother’s day coming I was only too aware of how much I appreciate my Mama (Kaelen’s Nana) and Doug’s mother (Kaelen’s Grandma) for all they did raising us and all they do now as mothers and grandmothers.  Just the thought of how much I treasure my little one is enough to get my eyes misting…  Oh well I’m a softy!

After we all slept in, I spent some time playing with and snuggling Kaelen.  When he got up from his morning nap, we left to spend time with Doug’s family for the afternoon.  Nicole & I went to a really great yoga class and then joined the rest of the family for dinner.  It is fun to have three generations of mothers in the family and special to all be together.  Grandma Race really LOVES talking to Kaelen, holding him, and getting him to smile and laugh.  I love seeing the joy he brings… such a sweet and happy little boy!

Doug surprised me with roses, one red one from him, and a second orange one from Kaelen.  He also wrote me a very sweet card (that made me cry- happy tears though!).  The cards I received from my parents and my in-laws were really special to… Its nice to hear their reflections on my “becoming” as a mother.  (Thank you all – your words mean so much).

I was also blessed by many friends who took time to wish me a Happy Mother’s Day…  It is special to be remembered by all of you and I appreciate the calls, texts, and posts.  A real treat at the end of the day was a surprise visit from my best friend!  I didn’t expect to get to see Lauren until sometime in June so I was delighted to see her arrive at the top of the steps with two pints of Ben & Jerry’s – oh she knows me so well!  Lots of great “mom” conversation haha!   I can’t wait to see you and spend a few days together (I hope!)

Here are a few pictures to document my first Mother’s Day with Kaelen.  Thanks to Doug for taking these!

10 Weeks Old

Posted on

This week went for Kaelen’s two month checkup.  He has gained over 5lbs since birth and is getting longer and longer… not that we needed the doctor to tell us those things… Haha!  A few other milestones from this week:

Kaelen slept for five and half hours for the first time this week!  It was FABULOUS!!!  His longest sleep cycle overnight has continued to slowly lengthen over time, and although it is still inconsistent night to night I am a big fan of the trend.  Today his naps seemed a bit more organized instead of him falling asleep many times and only taking “cat-naps”.

Kaelen seems to recognize more people than just Mama & Daddy, like his Grandma & Grandad (Doug’s parents), Nana & Papa (my parents).  When he recognizes them he immediately gets a huge beaming smile which he directs towards them.  This is often accompanied by him cooing a greeting.  It makes my heart melt when he does it with me!

Little Man also has a super strong grip which he applies readily to anything that brushes his palms.  He often has Mama’s hairs in his hands and can grab fistfuls if my hair is down… getting him to let go is the trick!  This feat also makes getting him dressed or undressed a bit on the tricky side.

I took a few close up pictures of Kaelen this week in addition to the regular weekly picture.  His Daddy was making him laugh and I thought his faces were priceless.  Enjoy!

Florida Trip

Posted on

The weekend that Kaelen turned 6 weeks old Grandpa (or as the great-grandchildren call him “Grandpa Magic”) turned 90.  So all of the Charlotte clan headed south to Palm Harbor, Florida to celebrate with him.  The Charlotte crew rented a large vacation home that had a pool out back and was a fantastic setup for all four couples and the 3 grandchildren.

The first day we went to see Grandpa Magic at his house where he held Kaelen for the first time.

We decided to take Kaelen swimming since it was warm even though it was the beginning of February!  The pool was a little cool for Kaelen so he didn’t stay in long, even after he adjusted to the temperature.  The rest of the clan joined in the fun either poolside or swimming/horsing around in the pool.

Sunday was the big celebration with Grandpa Magic and everyone in his community.  There was of course a magic show, singing, and alot of yummy cake!  We got a few family pictures that turned out great!

Four Generations: Doug, Kaelen, Dad(Jay), & Grandpa Magic

There were a few other highlights of the trip that I don’t have pictures of.  We had a few big breakfasts with the whole family (Sourdough Waffles- YUM!).  Fabulous dinners at The Lucky Dill and Spoto’s Steak Joint.  A few of us went shopping in Tarpon Springs and we ordered an entire flat of Baklava that we demolished throughout the rest of the trip.  Thanks for the idea Mark!  A special closing note (no pun intended) of the trip was coffee on Monday morning before we got on the road to come home.  Grandpa Magic plays violin in a band with several other members of his community and they played several valentines classics for everyone in the community! It was a wonderful trip and we especially enjoyed Kaelen getting to meet Grandpa Magic and our extended family for the first time.
