I have heard this quote more than once and feel like it exactly illustrates how I feel about the past months as I realize Little Man is nearly 1!

“The days go slowly but the weeks, months and years go quickly.”

I think I said this elsewhere in my blog, but the best advice that I heard repeatedly while pregnant was to really slow down and enjoy every moment because Warrior would grow and change so quickly. I thank God every day for our sweet Little Man and that I have truly taken that message to heart. The sweet and tender memories I have from this year are some of the absolute best of my life. I am truly blessed.
Kaelen has had tons more drooling and teething behavior this month but still no new teeth. I still think the fourth bottom tooth is the next one that will appear but the top canine tooth seems like it may come in before long as well. Only time will tell!

Kaelen continues to wear 18 month size clothes. Some of the pants need to be cuffed still so his feet don’t get stuck inside them while he is crawling. It looks like maybe he will actually stay this size for longer than he has stayed previous sizes which would mean he could wear this current set of clothes through the coldest months. Yay! Kaelen now has to have shoes on his feet whenever it is fairly cold out because even if his socks do stay on his feet with his activity level, he has figured out how to take them off! He tends to pull them off, chew on them, and then carries them around with him while he plays.

Little Man’s sleep got a little disrupted by daylight savings time, teething, and not feeling well, which combined with the busyness surrounding Thanksgiving, means that we are still working hard to get him re-settled into a stable sleep routine with just two naps per day and a return no over-night waking. Ideally, Little Man sleeps from 7:30 or 8pm until between 8am-9am and takes a 1.5 hour morning nap and a 1.5+ hour afternoon nap starting around 2pm. (someday it’ll happen…I will just continue to believe it’s possible until it does!)
This month we added several new foods including: Sautéed Spinach, Cranberry-Orange Dressing, and of course Turkey. Of those Kaelen liked the spinach and eats it somewhat regularly now. He tried the turkey several times but spit it out each time he tasted it even if it was “mixed in” with other foods he liked. The highlight of Kaelen’s Thanksgiving Dinner was Aunt Sarah’s Sweet Potatoes. I couldn’t reload his spoon or feed them to him fast enough! We are still nursing about five times per day and Kaelen seems to be happy with that frequency. We started letting Kaelen use a pre-loaded spoon with soft foods awhile back, but in the last month he has gotten really good at getting a significant amount of the yogurt, applesauce, sweet potato, etc. actually all the way into his mouth. It is so neat to see his coordination constantly improve. Kaelen uses either hand with a spoon and sometimes switches which hand he wants to use mid-meal (and sometimes uses both of course). I think it is so fascinating to watch little things develop as we see his preferences form over the next months.

Little Man said, “Mama” for the first time while looking me in the eyes when I went to pick him up out of his crib on October 31st! I was sooo excited! The speech therapist in me had to wait and see if he did it again to be sure it was 100% purposeful and completely linked to me, but it turns out that “Mama” was Kaelen’s true first word! Kaelen has continued to become more conversational and has begun imitating us telling him to say “more” by saying “mmmmm” or “mu” while he is eating and with some play activities like bouncing on the big exercise ball. Kaelen started saying “Dada” or “Dadadadada” while babbling just yesterday which we were really ready for.

Kaelen is very observant and seems to only need to see something once before he imitates and learns it! There are so many “activity” things that Kaelen is doing that are new so I think I’ll just list them as bullets:

– Kaelen now stops and claps to show his delight in something

– He can beat in rhythm with music (and still dances every chance he gets).

– Little Man began pushing on objects in front of himself to “walk” behind them on November 12, so we weighed down a medium sized cooler that is the right height for Kaelen and he pushes it around the on floor.

– Grandma taught Kaelen how to get the foam sea creatures (bath toys) to “stick” to the shower door or the sidewall of the bathtub and he has enjoyed playing with them that way ever since.

– Learned to turn the lights on and off using the switch on the wall.

– Starting to learn to purse his lips to kiss. He sometimes will give kisses with pursed lips but most often gives open mouth kisses. Kaelen has initiated giving his Daddy a kiss a couple times, but gives his Mama kisses all the time spontaneously! He will give close family and friends kisses sometimes if we ask him to, but not reliably (or spontaneously). I never cease to be amazed by how sweet spirited our little man is.

– Mid-month Warrior began taking more than 10 steps while holding on to our hands to move across the room. He has also started letting go of people/objects for just a second or two at a time while standing before grabbing back on or sitting down. We know it’s all just a part of the the pre-walking warm-up.

– Kaelen has been enjoying eating the knobs on the kitchen cabinets or opening/closing/banging the doors to play, but on “Pie Day” while we were at Grandma’s house making pies for Thanksgiving Kaelen figured out that there are lots of fun things INSIDE the cabinets to play with and explore! Time to install some more of the cabinet locks in the kitchen and bathrooms….

– Kaelen loves to carry around his toys with him as he plays and often has Sophie the Giraffe in his mouth or a hand, another toy, or even just one of his socks that he managed to pull off of his feet.

One last funny note to round off this post: Kaelen think it is absolutely hilarious when someone blows his or her nose. I would have expected him to be startled or bothered by someone sneezing and then blowing their nose, but instead he gets the biggest grin and starts belly laughing! We still haven’t figured out why it is so funny to him, but that sound delights our little boy.

Wow! Another Post is due already. Well here goes:
Kaelen weighs in at 22lbs! He’s getting so big! He’s also really tall but we haven’t taken the time to measure his height recently. Kaelen has been holding steady at 7 teeth although he has had a few days where he was really chomping on his fingers in one spot next to his bottom middle teeth so I expect that will (eventually) be the next tooth to come in.

Little Man is now completely in his 18 month fall wardrobe. The little fall & winter patterns are so cute. He’s got a couple plaid flannel shirts that I put him in with his little overalls. So Handsome! We took some pictures in that outfit at the pumpkin patch that I will have to post… someday when I get “caught up” haha!

We decided that it was finally time to train Kaelen to sleep all the way through the night and so we started letting him cry until he went back to sleep in the middle of the night (or at 5-6 am… whenever he was waking up). After 3 nights he quit waking completely, and when he stirs he may fuss a little but relocates and settles himself within a minute or two. Its interesting as we’ve observed his sleep habits we noticed that Kaelen completely relocates himself to various places in the crib several times a night. Mostly he doesn’t even make a noise, but he moves to a different corner for a few hours. He’s a very mobile sleeper!

Kaelen continues to be more conversational and loves to laugh. His favorite things to babble continue to be “bababa” and “mamama” with occasional other sounds mixed in. Blowing raspberries isn’t speech but it is still one of Kaelen’s favorite things!

Food wise we have continued to add in foods such as quinoa, tomato, banana, & sweet potato. Kaelen definitely has favorites and will eat all of carrots, tomatoes, or egg that are on the baby butler before he finishes other things but that’s fine by me! He has gotten to be such a good eater! We also took Kaelen “out to eat” to Chipotle with us where he sat in his travel high chair and “ate” with us. We have eaten with our families and away from home lots, but this was his first time “eating out” even though we brought his food from home with us. Little Man also figured out that he likes to hold things to eat a certain way and sometimes that means that he picks up multiple different things in one hand. Tonight he wanted both tomato and egg in his hand so he worked really hard at it until he had them both just the way he wanted so that he could take a bite of both together. As I watched him I couldn’t help but think how smart he was to analyze how to get set up to do it even though it took him several attempts to get everything just the way he wanted.

Kaelen clapped his hands for the first time on October 15th. We have even caught him clapping in rhythm a couple of times! Recently Kaelen was laughing at Doug making a fishy face so Doug taught him how to suck his cheeks in and make a “fishy face”, which Kaelen thinks is hilarious. He now does it when he is playing, crawling around, transitioning between activities, and sometimes when we attempt to get him to imitate us (although not very often). Kaelen is very much a climber. When he is playing nearby us he often will climb up on top of, or over us to get where he wants to go or just for fun. Its humorous to us since it takes so much of his effort but he really enjoys the activity!

Enjoy the 10 Month Pictures!

So much has happened this month it’s amazing how many changes happen in such a short amount of time!  It really is hard to keep track of everything that is new and different!  Somehow I’ve got to get better about jotting little notes along the way so I don’t overlook things.

Kaelen now has seven teeth, four upper and three on the bottom.  The two upper teeth on either side of the center came in within a few days of each other this month as expected since they seemed to be ready to pop out any second when I wrote the 8 month post.

Kaelen has finally reached the end of the 12 month clothes and I am in the process of switching out to his fall wardrobe of size 18 month clothing!  The first thing I had to switch out was the footed sleepers since the torso wasn’t long enough to allow room for his massive nighttime diapers.  It wasn’t long before I had to switch out the long-sleeved onesies and all in one jumpers/outfits.  Some of the 18 month pants/overalls are too long in the legs for Kaelen, but they’re right in the torso length so he will just be wearing cuffed pants and overalls until they’re the right fit!  As the weather has started cooling a little especially at night I’ve begun using some of the longer things and boy do I love overalls!  My Mama always use to say how much she preferred overalls to pants since the snaps on the bottoms of the legs make diaper changes so much easier and don’t require taking the pants down over/around the diaper each time.  I couldn’t agree more wholeheartedly!  We do have some pants, but I’m pretty sure for the most part that our Little Man will be living in overalls.

Kaelen has continued to wake once nightly to nurse, although the time has been widely varried this month.  I think it’s time to work with Kaelen on sleeping all the way through the night.  I hope to have a different update on that next month!  My hope for Kaelen switching to only taking two naps a day has still not materialized.  In the past few weeks Kaelen has seemed to prefer getting up a little earlier around 8am, which means that his first two naps are earlier in the day and by around 5pm he needs to lay down again.  I know it won’t be much longer before he drops a nap so I’m waiting patiently.  Kaelen has recently started to purposely snuggle on my shoulder when I’m putting him down for naps/bed time.  Its really sweet, after I put his sleep sack on him and am holding him as I walk over to the crib he puts his little head in the spot where my neck and shoulder meet and snuggles there for a few minutes.  I’ve decided that since he initiates it, that when he snuggles up I will hold him for a few moments longer and sway with him standing in front of the crib before I put him down for nap/bed.  I’ve prayed many times that he will stay snuggly & affectionate and so I’ve just been soaking this time up!

Kaelen has continued to be very vocal.  This month he learned to say “hoo” (somewhat like an owl sound).  He looks so silly when he says it and is often talking to a toy he is holding or to Daddy or me.  He continues to take turns while talking and will imitate and repeat us when we make the sounds he makes.

Kaelen has continued to become more coordinated and balanced with his standing and now often stands to play, holding onto the couch, his toy activity center, or one of us.  He loves to crawl to where we are if he isn’t near us and is into investigating everything!  Since he is more mobile Kaelen also comes to find or get me when he is hungry or wants to be held.  Its nice because it allows us to understand his desires a bit better.  Little Man loves to chase balls around on the floor and still carries the Sophie the Giraffe toy around with him everywhere he goes.      Kaelen has begun learning to “cruise” and has taken a few steps pushing on a small cooler, holding onto one of us, or the couches.  He still prefers to crawl mostly though, and if I stand him on the floor and hold his hands he will drop to seated and then take off crawling.

This month for foods I gave Kaelen some meats and proteins including Chicken, Salmon, Beef, and eggs. He LOVED the eggs (cooked hard and cut into strips) and the Salmon.  Kaelen would hunt around on his tray for all of the salmon or eggs and eat all of those before eating any of the other options.  All of the foods we are giving him are organic, vegetarian fed, free range, antibiotic free, no growth hormones, etc. Basically we want to protect him from pesticides and other chemicals that aren’t beneficial since anything he eats is more concentrated in his little body. It requires more planning on our part but we believe its worth the effort.  For nursing Kaelen is still nursing usually 6 times a day including his overnight feeding.  When he does occasionally get a bottle he gets 4-6 ounces at a time.

Our Little Man isn’t quite so “little” anymore!   So many changes this month and it just seemed to fly by.

At a recent well-baby visit Kaelen weighed in at 20 Lbs, 12 Oz.  We measured his height today and he is now 30.5 inches tall!  Kaelen has stayed middle of the road weight-wise, but has stayed on the tall side for his age.

Little Man has four teeth at this moment: One of the top center teeth, and three teeth on the bottom. There are several on the top that seem to be poised to come in at any second.  Kaelen LOVES having his teeth brushed.

Kaelen is still wearing 12 month size clothes, I am soooo THANKFUL not to be changing out his wardrobe already again in a month like I did with the last few sizes.  I did take a peek at what I have in the 18 month size and I’m super excited for Kaelen to get to wear the overalls that I snagged at the bag sale last month.  I only need to finish out his fall/winter wardrobe with some long-sleeve onesies and some PJ’s.

Sleeping has continued to stay much the same as last post, although Kaelen is staying awake longer between his naps usually at least 2 hours before he needs to lay down.  Sometimes Kaelen would rather play than nap and stays awake amusing himself in his crib for up to an hour before finally taking a nap.  More and more he seems to really only take 2 naps per day.  I am hoping that he will begin to lengthen these naps soon, but as of yet most of his naps fall between 1-1.5 hours.

Kaelen really started talking this month!  See this post that I wrote when he first started babbling.  Since that post Kaelen has added: papaya, nanana, and occasionally makes a /d or g/ but doesn’t say them repetitively or as often.  “Bababa”, “Mamama”, & “Papapa” remain his predominant favorites along with blowing raspberries.

This month marked the transition from “starting to crawl” to Kaelen being an accomplished crawler! I will write a post about his crawling progression and post some videos, but for this moment just enjoy the adorable crawling pictures that I took after this month’s picture session.

In “standing” news, Kaelen started pulling up on low chairs and his toys this month.  He also pulls up on us if we’re playing with him on the bed or floor.  He LOVES playing on the floor with his Daddy.  Doug likes to “roughhouse” with him, rolling around on the floor with him cradled in his arms kissing him, blowing raspberries, or making growling noises.  Kaelen laughs and laughs…. so cute!

Kaelen has added blueberries, steamed broccoli, steamed carrots, and puffs into his regular repertoire of foods. He has also tasted orange, grapes, and chicken.  He still makes funny faces with new foods, but “favorites” he greets with enthusiasm.  He has really gotten good at consuming softer foods.  In the past week he has been working on his pincer grasp and coordination with the puffs.  He can get them into his mouth now (rather than getting them “stuck” in his fist), although it isn’t pretty or smooth yet.  He LOVES eating the puffs though so I’m sure he will get good at eating them before long.  Kaelen has continued to nurse 5-6 times a day depending on his preference.

This month has marked the beginning of the childproofing project!  Since Kaelen is crawling so well we knew that we needed to get the gates installed and making other adjustments.  It’s crazy… who knew power cords for things were so appealing???

Thus far we have:
hung gates
installed a couple special outlet covers for outlets we use constantly
put plug covers in outlets
removed a speaker/speaker stand from the living room that Kaelen kept knocking over
purchased a fire screen & wired it to the fireplace
gotten good at keeping bedroom & bathroom doors closed

We have alot left to do in this department including installing the locks for the cabinets where there are chemicals or dangerous items in the kitchen/bathrooms.  However, we are going to “wait and see” for some of the childproofing to see what Kaelen does get into and how much we actually need to do.  One day I know we will have to put up the locks for the lever style door handles, but fortunately that’s a long way off!

Our Little Warrior doesn’t fit in the Laundry basket as well as he used to… my how he’s grown!  Maybe at the end of the year I’ll do a collage of all the pictures together…

Kaelen’s favorite thing to say BY FAR is “Bababa” but he does throw in an occasional”Mamama” “Dadada” or a “Wah” in the middle of a string of sounds. Its hilarious too because sometimes he’ll move his mouth like he is saying “Bababa” but the only sound is a smacking noise from his lips. He’s very conversational as well and often will start talking to us if we look at him and tell him, “ah bababa ba”.

We went to the pool last Friday and on Wenesday this week with friends and Kaelen absolutely LOVES kicking & splashing, & playing in the water. Ever since we visited Lauren & Lily in Atlanta we have also been working on holding his breath while I dunk him under water. The first couple times we practice at each visit to the pool he makes noises after but by the third of fourth time he comes up with a grin.

This week we visited Steve & Brittany at their lake home so naturally we took the bear with us for our Friday picture.  Since it was so picturesque we took Kaelen’s picture down on the dock and stayed down there to play a bit.  Kaelen also took his first (2) boat rides in a motor boat.  He LOVED it, even with the wind in his face.  Doug and I love it that Kaelen seems to truly be a “water baby”!

Brittany’s two dogs Roxy (mommy dog) & puppy, Bullet (a terrier mix) was super sweet and ADORED Kaelen.  He was smaller than Kaelen so I let them play together on the floor.  Bullet did like to give kisses more than I liked, but it gave Kaelen a perfect opportunity to spend time with a puppy.  Bullet liked to come and roll over right in front of Kaelen to be petted or just snuggle up next to him.  Both dogs were very patient with Kaelen as well and let him crawl after them and pet them as much as he wanted.  One really funny story: while Brittany & I were fixing dinner the two dogs gathered all of their toys right in front of Kaelen because they wanted him to play with them, so Kaelen obliged by joining in gnawing on one of the doggie bones!!!! I wish now I had thought to take a picture before I snatched the bone out of his hands!  We had a blast visiting and I’m looking forward to the next time!

Enjoy this week’s Bear picture!

Reflections & Special Moments

Posted on

Today I read a beautifully written blog entry written by Rachel Macy Stafford at HandsFreeMama.com about not hurrying through life so much that we hurt our children (and others) and miss those special sweet and tender moments as parents. I sat with tears streaming down my face as I read it; seeing my busy, list building, task oriented nature in her words… Realizing that without purposeful intention on my part in the coming months and years, “But for the Grace of God, there go I”.

Already I have slowed down since becoming a mother, many times its because I want to, other times because I HAVE to. The best piece of advice that many people shared with me before Kaelen was born was to cherish every moment because he will grow up so quickly.  I really took that to heart because so many people made it a point to say the same thing.  And I truly have endeavored to take time for the little things to be significant. Yet too often I have found myself frustrated or felt utterly inadequate to conquer a small list of tasks that I would have handled in short order pre-motherhood. Rachel’s thoughtfully written words remind me that in these moments I feel those things because of what I prioritize. It really is my choice how I measure myself, whether I am choosing to be happy and content with my life. (ouch!)

The reflection above caused me to reflect on a few things that I want to carry tucked away in my heart and memory forever as my baby boy so quickly grows:

~The way I feel like I could fall into Kaelen’s eyes as he looks up at me while we nurse.

~The way he laughs hysterically at me as though I’m the funniest person ever (even when I’m not doing anything special).

~The amazement I feel as I watch him learning a new skill. Right now it’s moving his hands together with his legs to crawl. Each little thing is something to celebrate!

~Yesterday I was crying (over something irrelevant) as I picked him up, and he sensing my emotion, grabbed my shoulder, gave me a sweet kiss and then cuddled with me, as if intentionally comforting me.

~The way that Kaelen stops and checks with his Daddy to make sure that everything is all right (like when he meets someone new). If Daddy smiles then everything is right with his world.

~Kaelen has always LOVED fans and light fixtures.  He will stop what he is doing to check out the lights and fixtures in any room and just delights in analyzing them.  Recently he was playing on a hotel bed next to a lamp and realized he could look at the lamp from underneath the shade, or rock up and look at it from outside the shade.  His curiosity and observance of things around him is incredible to watch.

~It makes my day every time I go to get Kaelen off the floor or out of his crib! When he spots me coming for him, Kaelen gets the BIGGEST smile and starts wiggling every part of his body in anticipation.  In that moment I feel like the most special person in all the world that he would respond that way EVERY time.

~Watching Doug play with Kaelen… Kaelen just LOVES his Daddy!  They have such a special bond.  Kaelen can hear or see Daddy in the room and can’t wait to play.  In fact if Kaelen is supposed to be nursing or focusing on something Doug has to “hide” and be quiet because otherwise Kaelen stops what he is doing every few moments to smile, coo, or try to play with Daddy.

These are just a few special moments, but at least if I write them down here then I can come back and be reminded of how special they are.  Time to go get my little man from his crib!

7 Months Old!

Posted on

This has been a busy and exciting month!  We are really enjoying this phase because Kaelen is doing something new almost daily and it is so neat to watch him as he figures new things out.  Sometimes we can almost see what he’s thinking… it’s so cool!

Kaelen is purposely moving pretty much wherever he wants and has begun moving faster. He can get all the way across the room rather quickly, and will if take off if he sees something he is interested in.  My friend Jessica describes the current movement pattern as Kaelen doing “the worm”! Haha!  I will post a video of it at some point just to document this stage. 🙂

On Friday Kaelen figured out how to get from his hands and knees to sitting up as often as he likes.  He did it about 6 or 8 times while we were visiting with Nana and has continued to move between crawling and sitting since.  Kaelen sat up in his crib to chew on crib rail for the first time today when I put him down for his morning nap.  I turned on the video monitor and just had to laugh since he was sitting there pretty as you please just going after the rail!  Doug ran in to catch a picture of him and lay him back down to take his nap.  I ordered a crib rail chew guard a month ago that didn’t end up fitting this crib so now I’m going to have to try again.

Kaelen is making lots of sounds and LOVES to sit and talk to his toys, or chatter when he’s riding in his car seat.  He makes the sounds: Ah, OOO, Oh, and /G/ in combinations.  His favorite noise right now is probably blowing raspberries, and he also likes to make screeching noises (but these he makes at a very quiet volume).

Little man is  now wearing 12 month size clothes.  I just changed over his clothes today from the prior size.  It is really nice that all of the clothes fit in two small drawers in the high changer and he mostly just wears onesies.  Yesterday,  Susan (Grandma) and I hit up a couple of the kid’s consignment stores in town since they were having a $10 bag sale and got lots of overalls, some shoes, and a few long sleeve things for Kaelen in 18 month & 24 month sizes.  It is really nice to be able to get things inexpensively!

Kaelen is continuing to take 2 or 3 naps per day.  It seems like he may be in the process of getting rid of his evening nap.  I hope that as he does that he will begin taking longer naps for his other two!   Overnight Kaelen does sometimes sleep 11 or so hours from 9pm-8am OR he wakes up between 5-6am to eat if he needs.  I’m good with him keeping the overnight nursing as long as he needs it.

Kaelen has his center two bottom teeth.  The second tooth came in 8 days after the first and thus far those are the only two. Since the Six Month post we did begin introducing food as planned using Baby-Led Weaning/Solids.  Kaelen sits in the “Baby Butler”, which is an old-fashioned baby seat that I got from my grandfather’s house to eat once or twice a day after he nurses.  Thus far Kaelen has enjoyed Cucumber Sticks, Carrot Sticks, Avocado Slices, Apple Wedges, Broccoli Florets, Sourdough Waffle (plain of course).  At first taste Kaelen made some really hilarious faces, and still does when we give him something new.  He seems to like everything, although his “favorite” seems to vary day to day.

Here are the pictures from this month’s shoot.  Kaelen was very funny and didn’t want to sit on the couch so he kept trying to crawl away each time we positioned him. So I’ve included a few of the “outtakes”.

6 Months & 26 Weeks

Posted on

I can hardly believe our little warrior has been here for half a year already!  Its mind boggling as I think about how much Kaelen has grown and changed in such a short period of time.  Since this post is both on a Friday and on a month anniversary I am only doing the one post.  All the weekly and monthly pictures will be at the bottom of the post.

I’ll start with Kaelen’s stats: He weighs more than 19 pounds but we don’t really know by how much, his height is 30 inches, and he has grown into 9 month size clothes.

One big development is Kaelen’s first tooth emerged last Saturday (June 22nd).  It is the left center tooth on the bottom.  The best part about this tooth’s arrival is that it came without causing much fuss.  Other than having been very drooly for awhile now Kaelen didn’t have any other symptoms of teething.  I certainly hope that he continues to have an easy time with incoming teeth.  The other bottom center tooth is on the way out any day now.  Once enough of the tooth is showing to get a picture I will, but thus far its impossible to get a picture of.

On Monday night (June 24) we took Kaelen to get his first haircut.  I know most people wait longer to cut their baby’s hair, however the long sections by his ears were constantly sticking to his face, getting in his eyes, and just generally looked scraggly…so we decided to go ahead and cut it.  I’m amazed at how much of a difference it made!  He still has little old man hair, but at least its a better shape now!  One day it will fill in… for now at least its cuter 🙂

Kaelen now sits for more extended periods of time on our laps or on a blanket while playing with a toy  (click here to see video I posted) but eventually falls over after awhile or when he’s “done”.  I would estimate he’s sat un-aided for possibly 5 minutes or more.  He sat under the play gym and held onto it/played with the toys from that perspective and seems to really be enjoying playing in the seated position.  This week we also got out the baby piano and the first block set and thus far he LOVES banging on the piano.

Little man is able to rock back and forth on his hands and knees.  This often results in him lunging and scooting around.  Today Kaelen did something that surprised us both because of the strength it takes; he picked himself up on his toes and hands….it looked alot like the yoga pose “downward facing dog”. I love it that there’s so much growing and changing!  Its exciting every day to see what he’s going to do next!

On Sunday Kaelen actually lunged/scooted/rolled across our bed to get to me about 3 different times.  It is so neat to see how he is purposely attempting to move himself to get places!  It seems like he could start crawling anytime he wants to but there are definitely a couple pieces he still has to figure out, like releasing his hand from the floor and reaching forward.  We realize with his new mobility that it is time to get the safety gates put up so that project is now on the short list to get done ASAP.

Kaelen is still taking three naps per day most days and is sleeping as much as 12-14 hours at night.  Most nights Kaelen has still been waking up to eat around 6am, but three times this past week he slept all the way through until 8am!  I am pleased with him naturally lengthening out his sleep, but eventually really hope that he will keep his routine “wakeup” time at 9am. (Hey I can hope even if it may not be realistic!) Kaelen loves to roll around and scoot in his crib when he’s supposed to be falling asleep at nap time or bed time which means that he often takes 30-60 minutes to go to sleep when I put him down… even when I make sure to put him down as soon as he starts showing signs of being tired.  I can put the baby in the crib, but I can’t MAKE him sleep….  Kaelen’s naps are continuing to range from 45 minutes-1.5 hours each.

Kaelen really wants to experience his whole world through his mouth.  He’s been able to pickup toys to chew on for a while, but this month he really has wanted to put EVERYTHING he sees and is interested in into his mouth.  He’s fascinated with anything we are holding, what we are doing, and ESPECIALLY our food and drinks think he’s even tried to chew on the mirror and the wall! On June 4th Kaelen “found” his toes and has since gotten where he will either bend all the way over to chew on them or pick them up to investigate or chew on.  Since he got that first tooth in he does seem to be more careful about chewing on his hands/feet from the sides of his mouth.

Little Man continues to nurse about six times each day and now that he has turned six months we plan to start him working on solid foods.  We are planning to use Baby Led Weaning, which essentially means that we will put large pieces of easy to grab foods (e.g. carrots, toast “fingers”) for him to learn to pick up and put in his mouth to gnaw on.  This method teaches him to feed himself, and to gnaw/chew on foods before he learns to swallow them.  Since he still gets all the nutrition he needs from nursing there’s no pressure on the amount of solid food he gets.  Another advantage to this way is that he won’t get used to the pureed consistency of most baby foods since he will be experiencing many textures right from the very beginning.  I’ll be sure to post lots along the way!

Five Months Old

Posted on

Kaelen is five months old already!  Wow!  Its amazing how the time has flown by since he turned four months.  Enjoy this (overdue) update and the pictures and video included!

Kaelen’s new favorite toy is the ExerSaucer that Aunt Lauren (my best friend) gave him when Lily outgrew it.  It didn’t take him long to learn how to turn himself around to whichever toy he wants to play with.  At some point I’ll post a video of him playing with it.  It is hilarious when instead of reaching for and grabbing a toy with his hand he dives at it with his mouth… haha… I’m amused by the little things! Coordination for grabbing things is increasing – he went from diving at toys with his mouth all the time to being able to reach for and play with toys when he is laying or sitting with coordinated intentional movements.  He also grasps his hands together in front of himself during play or to bring an object to his mouth.

He has rolled from front to back in his crib while wearing his sleep sack.  He walks his feet up and gets his butt way up in the air until he rolls. He has done it on several occasions but doesn’t do it routinely or when he is playing during tummy time.  Instead he has learned to roll from back to front over his left shoulder!!!  He did it for the first time today!!!  It was super slow and took him a long time so I only got the clip from the very end of the process.  I was pretty excited as you will hear 🙂

Little Man is sitting for longer periods of time and does really well staying upright for 15-30 seconds at a time, especially if he is playing with a toy.  I’m not sure why that helps, but the concentration on something in his hands helps him stabilize from falling over to the back or sides.  I took a picture of him sitting when I took his pictures to share here. (see below)

Kaelen is currently taking 3 naps per day & sleeping from 9pm until around 6am when he eats.  I have really grown to love this schedule and am feeling soooo much more rested as a whole!  I knew this time would come eventually and I am so grateful!  I can’t say I even mind the wakeup to nurse since he goes back to sleep until a “better” wakeup time.  He has come a LONG way in the area of self soothing and falls asleep within 2-15 minutes of being laid down.

Kaelen is getting SO big!  He has been wearing 6 month clothes but its time to start pulling out the 9 month size outfits and onesies!  Its really interesting – many of the clothes we have been given are really “wide” for him and not long enough since he’s significantly more tall than fat.  He does have the cutest little leg rolls though!

People have started asking us frequently about teething and while I know that its around the corner we don’t have any signs or symptoms of it.  Kaelen’s primarily exploration of the world does continue to be through his mouth, and his drool is up and down in quantity on different days (mostly up!).

Kaelen has gotten to be where he is ALL about his Daddy!  He wants me some, but if Doug is in the room or talking he would rather be engaged with him.  It is so sweet to watch them together.  Kaelen loves flying in the air above Daddy’s head… Doug just has to dodge all of the drool that tends to “bomb” his face when they play airplane! 🙂

Little Man LOVES to belly laugh!   He thinks its hilarious when we pretend to “eat” his toes or tickle him with our hair against his face.  Raspberries on his belly are another laugh inducing activity and he likes those best during diaper changes after he wakes up.

Kaelen’s hair seems to be getting a bit lighter over time and looks like it has red highlights in some lights or in pictures.  It is continuing to grow but hasn’t filled in too much yet… I keep saying that one of these days we are going to trim the sides so they don’t look so rough… its just a matter of getting him to the stylist while he’s up between one of his naps which is a bit tricky since he is only awake for 1.5 hours at a time including diapering and feeding time which is usually the first 25 or so minutes after he wakes up.  We will get to it…. eventually 🙂

Kaelen realized he could screech in the past week or so.  He loves to hear his voice when he is playing and really gets going sometimes!   It is a “fun” noise for him so we always know when he wakes up happy if he’s making those types of sounds.  Doug has taken a couple short video clips of him trying to get one of him screeching and playing but we haven’t got one we like yet… I’m sure we will get one soon.

Our friends often comment about what a happy, easy going baby Kaelen is… and now that he is well rested and has a routine that is working for him (and us) he really is!   He only ever gets worked up if he’s hungry and doesn’t think I’m feeding him fast enough or sometimes when we put his sleep sack on him and he’s not ready to go to sleep yet.  Its always fun to hear other people’s compliments… but we truly feel blessed.

Hope you enjoy the pictures this month… I took a bunch!

Last but not least, here’s the video of Kaelen rolling over that I mentioned earlier in the post.  It is the last little bit of the roll since he was doing the first part for a long time, I didn’t know that he would get all the way over this time.  I get a little animated in this clip, but come on… it is exciting stuff!
